Racing that gold 1971 Camaro with Papa John.

Prep for the 2013 Coca-Cola 600

In 2013 I’d begun doing things with Papa John’s, and got a call to meet them out at Ohio Vally Dragway for a shoot. Everyone knows the story about his gold 1971 Chevy Camaro, lost and sold and then found again. But does he really race it?

Yes he does, at least one of them, and he was out testing tune in preparation for the following Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 to race Marcus Smith, president at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It would be Schnatter’s Camaro versus Smith’s Ford Mustang.

I knew nothing about the upcoming race, only that we were shooting at a drag strip on a beautiful morning! The only problem we encountered was the branding on The Papa’s tee shirt, which he changed, and we kept going.

I never found out who won the race, but it was a huge celebration at the track for servicemembers and their families, billed as the World’s Biggest Memorial Day Celebration …
